San Jose JACL Responds to Offensive Tweet
    September 12, 2017

Local minor league baseball team, the San Jose Giants, produced a tweet promoting Japanese Heritage Night that created such a public backlash that the team was forced to take down the tweet and issue an apology.

The tweet showed three men dressed in happi coats, one performing karate kicks , one bowing, and the third fanning himself—actions that reinforce old Asian stereotypes.

Local TV network affiliates, KTVU FOX 2 and KPIX CBS 5, sought comment from San Jose JACL. Co-President Tom Oshidari lamented the all-too-often seen lapse in judgment and expressed the hope that the Giants team would do better going forward.
